Woah! Guerilla Knitting.

Haven't seen any in real life, but I'm willing to bet it would turn a frown upside-down. The lost shot is of First Street in Austin, Texas.

Birth of Cool

Anyone in Austin for SXSW? I wish I was, too. If you've got time to fit The Blanton Museum of Art's Birth of the Cool: California Art, Design, and Culture at Midcentury, do it.

Reminders for the Lazy

Austinite Erin over at Recovering Lazyholic has taken some fun pictures and turned them into magnets. They're all little reminders to go out and enjoy life. Such a cute idea and great web site!

Cappy Pics

Austin, Texas was hot hot hot yesterday. I actually got a sun burn. Here's the PINK Capitol building from the lawn, and another from the underground basement.

The trip was fun and informative. Sixth Street was INSANE because it was Fat Tuesday. I did not see any college students--mostly thugs with tattoos on their face, which surprised and scared me.

Got to get back to work... xo

Off to the Capitol...(of TX)

cap
-

...and this is the money-is-no-object version of what I'll be wearing. I'll probably look more like Liz Lemon from the first episode of 30 Rock: frumpy, stains, toothpaste on the face. Kidding, kidding.

Our agenda is nuts! here's just a taste of what we'll be doing:

-touring the capitol, meeting with Gov. Rick Perry
-eating at Stubbs BBQ (yummm)
-eating and staying at The Driskill (!!)
-watching a film at Bob Bullock Texas State Museum
-meeting the Attorney General, some senators and commissioners
-going to a cemetery (!?!?)
-6th Street (for any non-Texans, it is similar to Bourbon Street)

Sounds like lots of walking! We're all leaving on a bus at 5:30 am and we were slightly encouraged to bring alcohol on the bus. I don't think I will partake, and I can't imagine who would want to drink that early.

I hate that I'm going to a city where I have so many friends, but I literally won't have a moment to see any of them. It's okay though, the group I am going with is very diverse and a ton of fun and I love any excuse to go to Austin.

Austin Tablescape

I wish I could make this photo larger...

This was my Friday night in Austin. Couldn't have asked for anything more!
- sitting around, eating a delicious meal prepared by boys
-drinking all sorts of wine with friends
-Texas-glam backyard
-amazing weather

Thanks to our hosts for a great weekend!

AND P.S., I didn't have a Jenny Lewis sighting like others, but I did see John Paul Dejoria sans puppy. (I originally thought he was Paul Mitchell...but then after a little research I found at that Paul Mitchell has been dead for nine years). Are you jealous or what?

Austin Plus Fall Equals Yes

It definitely feels that this is the week Fall arrived. I'm waking up to no humidity, cool breezes and bare branches (okay, so the last one got a little help from Hurricane Ike.) It's only fit that we head up to Austin where the weather should crisper. We're going to get some last minute hang time with a friend who's about to start working abroad and catch up with everyone else we left behind. Our friends in Austin don't make it any easierliving in Houston. :)

ACL is also this weekend-- I won't be attending, but it will always have a place in my heart. Once I had class the Friday morning of the festival and my Political Science professor let us out early because he wanted to catch an early show. Loved it. I hope the weather stays nice for anyone headed out to Zilker. Have a GREAT weekend!

Black Joe Lewis and The Honey Bears

Last night I was fortunate enough to be invited to the Black Joe Lewis and the Honey Bears show at Warehouse Live in Houston. I'd never seen or heard them before but let me tell you, they were so much fun! Just by watching the eight-man band, you can see they're having an effing blast on stage.

They opened for Mates of State, and everyone in the audience was like.. "hmm.. these guys are way better than Mates of State," albeit the two bands sound nothing alike. Would Mates of State have a song called Bitch, I Love You? If you're in Austin tonight, check them out at Emo's. It might be the last chance you get until they hit the summer festival circuit. Photo cred.

Dots

Yesterday we had brunch at Starlite, a swanky little joint in Austin's warehouse district. Food: excellent. Service:so-so. I had some bitchin' eggs benedict. They seemed short-handed, so I'd definitely go back some time.

Our table was directly under this sparkly chandelier and cool piece of art that looks like it was created with stolen paint samples from Home Depot. It's a neat idea... and I want to give it a try, but not use a depressed little girl's face.

Later Dudes

Two quick things before I head to San Marcos/Austin for a low-key birthday weekend...

1. Saw a little bit of the Scripps National Spelling Bee during my lunch break today. Oh my gosh.. I wish I had known about this show earlier. I would have TiVo'd the whole thing. These kids are ridiculously nervous and dorky. Love it.
How do you explain to a French person that this is not a game show, it's serious?

PLEASE take the time to watch this video. This kid has no tact.

2.On my way back to work saw a car with the licence plate HI IQ. Are you kidding me? Lame.

For the Sophisticated Keg Partier

A couple weeks ago in Austin, I went to a pretty cool party on West Campus. It wasn't the typical UT party.. this had the faboulous DJ known as LAX-- so it wasn't a typical anything party. There was a keg of course, and with that, a shortage of cups. By the time my friends and I showed up we resorted to drinking our beer out of extra large mason jars and coffee cups. Hmph. I'm not too old for this..

I know I just gradauted and all, but I think with the exception of that party, I hadn't been a regular at any keg parties in a looonnngg time. Anyway, these glass cups from CB2, Crate+Barrel's little brother, are a nostalgic nod to the keg years. I want some, stat!!
